Great Kids' Games

Education & Development Blog

Working in a child care centre is great fun, as kids can be such a pleasure to work with. However from a PE pedagogical perspective, this is a prime chance to develop key motor skills, communication skills, and the ability to communicate with others in a loud and stressful environment. Children are very good at absorbing information, and so they are likely to remember many of the key things that you teach them. This guide will provide some great syllabus-based activities and games that can be used in a child care centre for children aged 4 and above, with information about how the activities can develop them educationally.

Islands

Islands works well if you have a larger space or hall in your child care centre. The games revolves around developing motor skills from running and changing direction, whilst simultaneously learning about numbers and team work. It's also perfect for dexterity training. The game begins with the children running around the hall, pretending to swim. A designated number of mats are laid out; about five per 30 students works well. When a number is called, the students must run to a mat and ensure that there are students equal to the number called standing there. This develops their understanding of numbers and gets them to practice counting at a quick pace. When communicating with other children, they will need to direct each other to other mats. If all mats are full and there are some children left, or the children have the wrong number on the mat, then they must do a simple exercise such as star jumps. This is great for enhancing their cardiovascular health.

Run! Shark!

You can really enhance the fun factor with the addition of sharks. As the children run around, direct them to use different methods of travel, such as hopping or crawling. When 'shark!' is called, run out and try to catch them. They will then try to run to a mat and help each other to stay on. You can remove mats each round to force them to support each other when trying to balance on the mat. Any children who are caught sit out for a round.

Start Early

It's easy to leave children to their own devices at a care center or pre-school, but involving them in team games will help them develop key skills which will prepare them when they eventually go to primary school.

Education and Development for Children and Adults

Recently, I have learnt a great deal about different educational opportunities which are available to children and adults. I was enrolling my child in a local school. While I was filling out the paperwork, someone approached me and gave me a leaflet about adult education. I stuffed the leaflet in my pocket and forgot all about it until I was doing the laundry a week later. I was really impressed with the courses on offer so I decided to sign up for a class. I hope this blog helps you to discover more about adult and child education and development.
